The
Jeep YJ Wrangler , was the "first
Wrangler", and replaced the much-loved Jeep CJ-7 in
1987. It was a new design with a longer wheelbase, less
ground clearance, and more creature comforts. Some of its
inspiration came from its stable mate, the Jeep Cherokee,
rather than from its CJ predecessor alone. This prompted
some Jeep purists to interpret the YJ as a "yuppie
Jeep" upon the model's introduction. YJ Wranglers are
easily identifiable by their rectangular headlights.
Jeep YJ Wranglers initially were offered with the 2.5 Liter
AMC 4 cylinder engine, or the optional 4.2 Liter (258 c.i.)
straight 6 cylinder motor until 1991. That year, a fuel
injected 180 HP, 4.0 Liter was introduced to replace the
112 HP 4.2 Liter. The roll cage was also extended in 1992
to allow for rear shoulder belts. Antilock brakes were added
as an option in 1993. An automatic transmission option for
the four cylinder Wranglers debuted in 1994, along with
a center high mounted stop light.
