The Jeep
XJ Cherokee debuted in 1984 and was the
original compact SUV. The XJ was 21 inches shorter,
6 inches narrower, 4 inches lower and 1,000 pounds
lighter than the Jeep SJ Wagoneer it replaced. The
XJ Cherokee utilized unibody construction instead
of the traditional chassis frame. Until 1988, the
Cherokee was the only compact SUV to offer both
2 door and 4 door models. Originally fitted with
the choice of a 2.5 Liter four cylinder engine,
or a 2.8 Liter V-6 made by General Motors, the famous
Jeep 4.0 Liter straight 6 cylinder did not emerge
until 1987. The XJ had several four wheel drive
systems over the years including the Command-Trac
and Selec-Trac, which offered either part time or
full time four wheel drive traction. Various interior
and exterior styling, comfort and off-road packages
were available. Aside from minor trim changes, the
XJ Cherokee remained largely unchanged until 1995.
Built in the USA and China, the XJ Cherokees have
proven enduringly popular with 4WD enthusiasts for
their off-road abilities and the wide availability
of aftermarket upgrades. Suspension, drivetrain,
performance and other modifications are manufacured
by many offroad companies.
A variation of the XJ Cherokee from 1984-1990 was
the XJ Wagoneer. It was offered in two trim levels:
the Wagoneer and the Wagoneer Limited. Both XJ Wagoneers
were distinguished from the Cherokee by their four
headlights and vinyl wood side trim special to the
Limited.
